Jupp Ernst (1905-1987) was a famous German graphic artist and industrial designer who has influenced the design of the postwar years in Germany. From 1926 to 1929 he studied graphics at the Handwerker- und Kunstgewerbeschule in Bielefeld, took part in the groundbreaking first Werkbundausstellung 1949 in Cologne and became 1951 board member of the Deutscher Werkbund. In 1957 Jupp Ernst founded together with Wilhelm Sandberg and Wilhelm Wagenfeld the famous german design magazine "form". He was the director of two Werkkunstschulen (Wuppertal and Kassel). From 1963 to 1964 he was a member of the documenta council and was the documenta art director of the department Industrial design in 1964. Above all his draughts for the companies Melitta, Resopal, Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau, Tapetenfabrik Rasch and Afri Cola were very style defining.
