See concerning the engraving in the preword of a catalogue of this time: "Meanwhile reproduction engraving pursues its glorious course, adding to its art the latest techniques of wood and stone engraving. (...) To-day, there is a revival of favour of simple cutting and fewer lines; the design grows bare, the drawing becomes precise, the white paper is once more visible and regains its value as a contrast." (p.6)
See about the French mind: "It is nevertheless one of which we are proud because it allows us to offer to other nations both the productions and the methods of thought which seem to us to have a universal value, and it gives us the chance to appear before other nations as a people both human and humanist, whose highest mission is to serve humanity." (Jean Cassou in: La Peinture Francaise Moderne, 1946, p.11)
